Why I built PPL Free Ground School

Earning my private pilot certificate is one of the proudest things I’ve ever done.

Somewhere between my first lesson and my checkride, I noticed something. The courseware was good, but it was one size fits all. Ideas often didn’t really click until my flight instructor, or the right person on YouTube, explained them a different way.

Along the way I learned a few things:

• There’s a wealth of great free material out there, if someone helps you find it and put it in order.
• Online ground schools cost too much, especially early, when you’re still finding out whether flying is for you.
• Most courses march everyone through the same format: video, bullet points, quiz. Real students need to slow down in some places and speed up in others.
• Passing the FAA knowledge test is like any big exam. It takes organized, focused repetition on exactly what you missed. Rereading the whole mountain of material won’t get you there.
• Younger and older students learn very differently, and at very different speeds.

I loved flying so much that I wanted my wife and our 17-year-old son to share it. So I built them the course I wished I’d had. That’s how PPL Free Ground School was born.

Giving back

So many generous people in general aviation helped me: instructors, fellow students, and people who post thoughtful videos simply to help strangers learn. Technology is the gift I have to give back. So I built the most complete ground school I could imagine, and made the course free, forever.

What you’ll find here

• The whole course is free: every lesson, unlimited practice and full mock exams. You can read lessons and start practicing without an account.
• 22 modules and 93 lessons, with 899 practice questions in the style of the FAA knowledge test, each with a cited explanation. Plus unlimited mock exams in the real 60-question, 2.5-hour format.
• A free account tracks your mastery of each of 226 objectives, schedules review before you forget, and estimates when you’ll finish the coursework from your real pace.
• A Next button that picks your best next step as you answer, and tells you why.
• Study modes for how you learn: flashcards, missed questions, rapid review, weak areas, real-world scenarios and oral-exam practice with the AI instructor.
• An AI instructor that answers from FAA sources (the course’s cited PHAK, AIM, 14 CFR and ACS material), cites every answer, and knows your progress through the course. When it can’t back something up with a source, it says so.
• Your instructor can see your readiness score and weakest areas, if you choose to share, and send you study suggestions. The portal is free for instructors and flight schools.
• Over 300 hand-picked YouTube videos, right inside the lessons.
• Everything is cited. Every lesson, question and answer points to the PHAK, AIM, 14 CFR, the ACS or official FAA figures. The private pilot curriculum, practice questions and answer choices were reviewed by a panel of three certificated flight instructors (CFIs), alongside our AI review system (AI_CFI).
• Every lesson is narrated in a natural voice, so you can learn in the car, on the ramp or in the pool. I did a lot of mine while swimming laps.

Honest about money

The course is free and always will be. Two optional add-ons, unlimited AI instructor time and a course-completion certificate, cost $99 each and help cover AI costs that grow with use. There are no affiliate deals and no paid placements.
